The two most influential voices in AI are publicly feuding over chip exports to China, and the stakes go way beyond corporate rivalry
When the White House starts asking uncomfortable questions about AI technology ending up in Chinese hands, there’s a classic corporate playbook: point at someone else. Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei appears to be running that play with impressive conviction, redirecting scrutiny toward Nvidia and its CEO Jensen Huang over the thorny issue of advanced chip exports to China.
The nuclear analogy that started a war of words
Amodei kicked off the hostilities in January 2026 by labeling the sale of Nvidia’s H200 chips to China as “crazy.” He didn’t stop there. He compared selling high-end semiconductors to a geopolitical adversary to arming them with nuclear weapons. Huang called the analogy “stupid.”
Huang contends that restricting chip sales to China doesn’t actually slow down Chinese AI development. Instead, it pushes Beijing to accelerate domestic chip production, which would eventually create competitors that Nvidia wouldn’t face if it had simply kept the customer relationship.
The feud took on new dimensions when a White House official accused Chinese startup Moonshot AI of distilling Anthropic’s model, called Fable, using restricted Nvidia hardware. For Nvidia, the accusation implied that its chips were the tools enabling the alleged theft, adding fuel to Amodei’s argument that selling advanced hardware to adversarial nations creates downstream risks. Rather than addressing how Anthropic’s model allegedly ended up being distilled by a Chinese firm, Amodei’s public commentary has consistently steered the conversation back to the hardware pipeline.
The Trump administration’s mixed signals
The Trump White House has sent mixed signals on AI chip exports, approving limited shipments of advanced Nvidia H200 chips while simultaneously raising alarms about Chinese firms exploiting US technology. Both Amodei and Huang have engaged directly with the White House on AI safety and export control policies. Huang has been involved in discussions with Trump and various senators, leveraging Nvidia’s position in the AI supply chain.
If the administration ultimately aligns with Amodei’s push for stringent export controls, Nvidia faces a scenario where a significant revenue stream gets choked off by regulation. Tighter restrictions on advanced chip sales to China would directly impact Nvidia’s top line and could force the company to restructure its international sales strategy.
For Anthropic, the Moonshot AI allegations raise questions about model security that Amodei’s deflection strategy can only paper over for so long. If Anthropic can’t demonstrate that its models are resistant to distillation by foreign adversaries, the “responsible AI” brand takes a hit regardless of what Nvidia does.
